Access to Unlock services

Open Data, Open Service

Many of the data sources that Unlock Places searches through are open data. The open data side of Unlock is a completely open service - anyone is free to use it and to re-use the data for any purpose.

If you're planning on making very intensive use of Unlock within a short term, we'd be glad of the stress-test on our service, but it would be kind if you'd contact us to tell us how you're using it.

For UK academic subscribers we also offer a search through Ordnance Survey data sources which needs registration, for which read on.

Ordnance Survey Data for UK research

To get detailed UK data extracted from Ordnance Survey MasterMap, you'll need an API key, a token which you send with each request to Unlock.

You can get an API key through Digimap, which offers access to Ordnance Survey data to UK higher and further education institutions. The Digimap FAQ has more information about how to get access to Digimap.

Walking through registration

Log in to the Digimap home page using your institutional login.

On the Digimap Collections home page you'll see links to different services available, at the bottom right is the Unlock logo:

Following the Unlock link, you'll see a copy of this site with a large yellow button that looks like this, pointing to the 'register' link.
